In this article, we’ll go over the steps for measuring glove size, some tips to keep in mind, and common issues that may arise.

Steps for measuring glove size

Let’s now get right into the steps to measuring glove sizes. The steps are quite easy but it may help if you have someone to help you with the measurements.

Prerequisites for glove measurement

Before you start measuring for glove size, it’s important to have a few prerequisites in place to ensure accurate measurements:

  • Flexible measuring tape: To measure the hand circumference and finger length accurately, you’ll need a flexible measuring tape that can wrap around the hand and fingers comfortably.
  • (alternate) Non-tretchable string: If you don’t have a flexible measuring tape, you can use a non-stretchy string or ribbon to wrap around the hand and fingers. Once you have the measurement, you can then measure the string or ribbon against a ruler.

Step 1: Measure hand circumference

The first step is to measure the circumference of your hand. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your palm and note the measurement in centimeters or inches based on your preference.

This measurement is enough to help you find the glove size. You can scroll below to find the glove size chart. If the store you’re buying the gloves from also has the length measurement for better fit, move on to step 2.

Step 2: Measure hand length (optional)

If you are buying expensive gloves for sports or specific activities, you may need hand length measurements. Take the tape measure and start measuring from the crease right below your wrist.

Step 3: Choosing the right size

Once you have your hand circumference and hand length measurements, refer to the sizing chart provided by the glove manufacturer. Here’s a sample glove size chart that you can refer to.

Tips for measuring glove size

  • Use a flexible tape measure. The tape must wrap around the hand well without being too stiff.
  • If possible, avoid measuring with strings or ribbons as it may give you inaccurate measurements.
  • Ask someone to help you with the measurements. You’ll be measuring with just one hand and taking measurements by yourself can be difficult.

Different types of gloves

Not all gloves are created equal. Different types of gloves require different measurement techniques to ensure a perfect fit. Here are the most common types of gloves and how to measure them:

Fingerless gloves

Fingerless gloves are designed to cover the palm of the hand and wrist, leaving the fingers exposed. They are ideal for tasks that require dexterity, such as typing, texting, or playing musical instruments. Fingerless gloves are also popular among bikers, weightlifters, and hikers who need a good grip and control over their hands.

Full-fingered gloves

Full-fingered gloves cover the entire hand and fingers. To ensure a comfortable fit, measure the hand circumference and hand length, and also the length of each finger. Measure around the widest part of the hand and from the base of the palm to the tip of the longest finger. To measure the length of each finger, start at the base of the finger and measure to the tip.

Mittens

Mittens are similar to fingerless gloves in that you only need to measure the hand circumference and hand length. However, mittens have different shapes, so it’s important to measure the hand while it’s in a relaxed position.

Touch screen gloves

Common glove sizing issues

  • If your gloves are too small, they will feel tight and uncomfortable, and you may not be able to fully extend your fingers. Too-small gloves may rip or tear during use.
  • If your gloves are too big, they may slip off during use, reducing their effectiveness in protecting your hands. Excess material can get in the way and make it harder to grip objects.
  • Different manufacturers may have different sizing charts, which can be confusing and frustrating for consumers.
