We’ve shared the benefits of SEO before, such as getting a better ROI, gaining good traffic even with a smaller advertising budget, or by maintaining a better search ranking, you can leave a better brand impression on potential consumers, gain more brand exposure, and attract potential customers to visit the website and increase sales!

Today we’re going to focus on the WooCommerce platform to help you get higher search rankings and organic traffic for your e-commerce business.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is the world’s most popular e-commerce plugin designed for WordPress. Since it’s an open-source solution, you can use it for free, retaining full ownership of all the content on your e-store, and customize the design and layout of your e-commerce site. The best part yet is that it comes with an active community across the world who continuously build new plugins for WooCommerce and share knowledge online.

After you install WooCommerce on your site, it automatically adds a checkout page for you. With its built-in Setup Wizard, you can easily choose how you want to get paid, configure your shipping options and simplify tax calculations.

Due to its flexibility, WooCommerce is one of the most SEO friendly e-commerce platform. Once you’ve had WooCommerce activated, you can choose different templates, add products, titles, descriptions, or any SEO-friendly content needed. You can also install various plugins for SEO. However, SEO takes effort and time to set up. We will share a few WooCommerce SEO tips for your marketing strategies.

Add Key Phrase in Your Product Title

key phrase

When deciding on product title, in addition to making it easy for customers to understand, it is also important to make them SEO-friendly. Since the title also appears on the search engine result pages, it’s critical to have different names for different products even though they are similar.

One important aspect is that SEO titles cannot be plain or generic. For example, instead of “girl’s jacket”, it’s better to use “boyfriend style, water-proof, chic denim jacket – Small.” By implying the product’s uniqueness, style, function, color ,and size, consumers are likely to search for specific terms, and Google would rank your search higher than competitors selling similar items.

In addition to product pages, each category page, such as women tops, men tops, and other individual pages, is also recommended to include key phrases. The most common way is to add the brand name directly to the page, but a more effective way is to follow the season’s trendy products or add keywords with high search volume to the title so that consumers searching for similar products can find your product information and might purchase related products.

Have a complete product description

product description

It’s better to not have an overly lengthy product description. Since each product pages is indexed by search engine, a good SEO-friendly description is important.

First is be informative about the product features and benefits. Write about all the detailed aspects of the products: the purpose and use of the product, the material and technical details, the key benefits, the intended user, and anything you think is important to know from a buyer’s perspective. It’s important to understand that SEO-friendly is more than just packing a bunch of SEO keywords together since Google has learned to optimize for end user values so simply being promotional and not providing value actually hurt your SEO.

Formatting your description into a good structure helps SEO as well. Including your keywords in one of the H2 headings and the first paragraph can give your SEO score a big plus.

Lastly, make sure our have original copy of your description. It’s never a good idea to copy and paste content from other websites or pages, not only because it’s a copyright violation, your website might get panelized and never show up in the search result.

Optimize Your Images

Images are not crawlable for Google so naming them is like telling search engines what this image is about. When you upload a photo, add the information into the Alt Text field. This information not only helps your SEO ranking but also tells visitors what the image is about while the site is loading. And the best practice for Alt text is to include your brand name and product’s key phrase or keyword.

Image quality is another thing that you should keep in mind. We all agree that people like to look at high quality, great resolution pictures with fine details. However, site speed is a key factor in your SEO score. When your website contains lots of images in great quality with huge size, it can slow down your website’s loading speed significantly. It harms your SEO and causes a bad shopping experience for your customers. We’d recommend you use image optimization tools like WP Smush which helps you compress image but still keep the same perceived quality.

Keep the URL Clear and Concise

For WooCommerce and WordPress users, be sure to enable WordPress’s permanent link so that consumers and search engine crawlers can visit your page without issues. Please go to Settings > Permalink Settings and choose one of the URL display settings.

Among these settings, Post name or Custom Structure is the most recommended. Even though the permalink settings may seem minor, once you change to Post name or Custom Structure, you can show links that contain product keywords instead of random numbers or dates, which also give your consumers and search engines information about your site.

For example:

Choose a good SEO Plugin

There are many SEO plugins available in the market such as Yoast WooCommerce SEO or All in one SEO which both have outstanding reviews. With an SEO plugin you can do more advanced settings such as adding structured breadcrumbs URL, setting meta description for each post/page, or improving Sitemap to simplify the site structure for search engine crawlers to better understand the site.

We hope these five SEO tips above for WooCommerce users can help you have a better ranking in search results. We will share more optimization tips and tools for WooCommerce later on.
